A Letter to My Son

With permission from my sixteen-year-old son, I want to share with you a letter I wrote to him. I am only sharing because my prayer is that my transparency with my son will expose the journey we are on together—him seeking to find his place in the world, who he is and why he was created. My letter reminds him of what’s important and attempts to refocus him on seeking his life mission. If we can get our kids thinking this way well before adulthood, they should have a head start on crucial life questions that many individuals well into their thirties and forties are just beginning to ask.

Dear Kamryn,

I’m writing this letter because many times verbal words get processed too fast, so I figure if I WRITE this very important message, you will be forced to stare at every word to process it. My prayer is that as you stare at it, each word will sink deep down, so deep you really truly believe it.

YOU, my son, are here on earth for a purpose, more than likely to solve a problem. A family problem, a community problem, a culture problem, a political problem, or maybe even a spiritual problem; nevertheless, you are not here just simply to take up space. Your first mission is not to make the basketball team, graduate H.S. or even find who your next girlfriend is. Your mission is to find out what problem you were created to solve. Once you have that answer, you more than likely may have just found your purpose.

Once you have purpose and you become excited to fulfill it, you will then realize that nothing is worth detouring from it. You will find that the minor temptations that will come your way will not compare to the gratification of solving that problem. Because you are so gifted, it may be easy to inaccurately identify a problem as “the one,” but listen to the Holy Spirit because He will validate it for you. Stop caring about what people think. Stop living your life in-jailed by the small opinions of others. Stop being afraid to fail. Stop believing the lie that you don’t measure up. Think big, live big, and do not be scared to make mistakes trying to solve “that problem.”

I love you with all that is within me. Now go out and complete the mission and solve “that problem.”

Love,

Mom, your biggest fan

Now that I have been awakened to the concept that it’s important to know who we’re raising, I am so aware of who my children are and pay very close attention to how they maneuver through life. Raising four children, I honestly have been given a front row seat into many of the ministry gifts—apostle, prophet, pastor, teacher, and evangelist (Ephesians 4:11)—and other gifts as well. I didn’t always understand, so hopefully you can learn from my missteps.

Break-in news flash! There is no big Holy Spirit for adults and little Holy Spirit for children. I really like how Pastor Bill Johnson says it, “There is no Junior Holy Spirit for kids.
